One day 126 years ago, an oil lamp danced with flamesin a small consulting room on Yangliu Lane of Mochifang in downtown Wenzhou.

Under the dimrocking shadow, Dihgley Hospital (the predecessor of Wenzhou Central Hospital) performed the first surgical operation in Wenzhou.

A lamp can give off bean-sized faint light, but ten thousand points of starlight can light the whole earth. 126 years later, Wenzhou Central Hospital has been promoting minimally invasive medicine widely starting from "Ouyue First Knife" to continue century-old surgical blood vessels for sustainable innovation in medicine, with both a benevolent mind and hearton the points of knives.

From "Ouyue First Knife" 126 years ago to minimally invasive "Small Incision Effective Treatment"

"With the ointment on his forehead, the person was fainted like death, who was stripped of clothes first with medicinal water to wipe the abdominal skin, the sharp blade was taken out to cut open the chest and abdomen ...... a piece of the meatballs in the liverwascut off and discarded. Then the liver and other organs were completely put into the abdomen position, with the abdominal skin sewed with threads, and then wiped with medicinal water, someone wasordered to carry this person out of the house. When the plaster was about to be removed, the person hadsuddenly woken up."

In the book "Looking for WilliamEdwardSoothill", recorded the surgical scene where a liver resection was being performed in Wenzhou Dihgley Hospital (the predecessor of Wenzhou Central Hospital) 126 years ago. This operation also created a precedent in the history of surgery in Wenzhou.

A live surgery was being performed by Yu Haibo (middle), the discipline leader of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Department of Wenzhou Central Hospital during the academic week of “Dihgley” Minimally Invasive Medicine.

Now, 126 years later, liver resection is performed with "Black Technology" - 3D cavity endoscopic technology. Not long ago, Yu Haibo, the discipline leader of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Department of Wenzhou Central Hospital, used 3D endoscopic technology to remove a huge liver tumor with a diameter of up to 12 centimeters for an elderly patient.

"Previously, traditional open surgeries caused big surgical traumas, and patients had to be hospitalized for half a month due to slow recovery." Yu Haibo explained thatusing endoscopic technology only requirescutting a few small holes ona patient's stomach, with the advantages of small trauma, fast recovery time, short hospitalization time, etc.

Nowadays, endoscopic surgerieshave entered the 3D era, when surgeons have been more proficient in performing various difficult and critical surgeries with the help of 3D endoscopes. Yu Haibo notes that 3D endoscopic system has 4K high-definition screen, which can make it easy to see blood vessels as fine as hair clearly, enable surgeons to performs surgeries in deeper and more three-dimensional ways, so that theyare able to perform dissections more meticulously, improving the accuracy of difficult and complex surgeries.

Hong Shizhe, the director of the hospital'sDepartment ofGeneral Surgery, mentioned that the surgery department of Wenzhou Central Hospital was established in 1952.In 1997, WenzhouCentral Hospital began to carry out minimally invasive surgeries, and became one of the earliest hospitals to perform minimally invasive surgeries in the southern part of Zhejiang Province. Departments of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Gastrointestinal Hernia Surgery, and Vascular Surgery also took the lead in carrying out minimally invasive surgeries in Wenzhou.

Li Chunmeng (first on the right), the discipline leader of Vascular Surgery Department, was performing the minimally invasive surgery.

"Aortic aneurysms, which originally required opening chests or abdomens to complete surgeries, can now be cured through the minimally invasive technique of 'endoluminal recovery of totally puncturing aortas' with a small punctured eye at the root of the thigh." As one of the earliest vascular surgery centers in the province to carry out specialized technology, the Department of Vascular Surgery of Wenzhou Central Hospital has carried the minimally invasive technique through to the end in recent years. Li Chunmeng, the discipline leader of the department, noted that they have created a series of special treatment modes to truly realize "Small Incision Effective Treatment", and let patients get the best diagnosis and treatment with minimal trauma.

Progressing from basic level to advanced domestic level

One summer morning 34 years ago, Sun Jun, who just graduated from the then Zhejiang Medical University (now Zhejiang University School of Medicine), took a map of Wenzhou city, stood at the entrance of Dajian Lane, looked up and saw the signboard of Wenzhou Second People's Hospital (now Wenzhou Central Hospital).

He realized that he was going to report to the oldest hospital in Wenzhou, which was actually so "hidden in the city", hidden in a low-rise houses. And what he did not expect more is that he is going to the brain surgery department thatwas also so simple and crude: only three doctors including him, were sitting in an empty ward, without any patients.

One afternoon in 1995, during his further training in Shanghai Huashan Hospital, Sun Jun met an outpatient clinicpatient, who showed him a CT report that was offered by a hospital of Wenzhou. The patient said the examination was finished that morning. At that time, people all go to Shanghai by ships. The patient was examined in Wenzhou in the morning and arrived in Shanghai in the afternoon. So he must have chosen plane as his transportation..

This touched him a lot: Wenzhou patients traveled far and wide to see a doctor in Shanghai, as a doctor in Wenzhou, why can't he keep the patients?

The footsteps of time have come to the present day.

Sun Jun (first on the right), the deputy secretary of the Party Committee, and president of Wenzhou Central Hospital, is performing cerebrovascular interventionsurgery.

If surgical technology is the "gold standard" for evaluating a hospital's medical level, then the degree of applying minimally invasive neurosurgical technology is the "gold standard" for measuring a hospital's surgical high-tech medical level. In 1995, they performed neurosurgical intervention surgery once per week, but now they can perform cerebrovascular intervention surgery 6 or 7 times per day, even with a maximum of 14 times per day.

34 years ago, Doctor Sun Jun was young, now he is the deputy secretary of the Party Committee, and president of Wenzhou Central Hospital, enjoys the State Council Government Special Allowance. He has also led his neurosurgery team to create a "Wenzhou Specimen" in the field of cerebrovascular disease diagnosis and treatment, and the discipline level ranks among the domestic advanced level, having won a lot of "National" honors such as the first batch of National Health Commission Advanced Stroke Center, the first batch of National Health Commission Stroke Screening and Prevention Base Hospital ......

From the three "Specialists" to the young people who make a difference

In recent years, "Dihgley" minimally invasive medicine academic week of Wenzhou Central Hospital has made itself widely known in the way of "Internet + surgery". Last year, the hospital shared 15 live surgeries of neurosurgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal hernia surgery, vascular surgery, cardiovascular medicine, and gastroenterology, etc.,showed 52 classic minimally invasive surgeries to the whole country, and the cumulative online clicks amounted to more than 230,000 times, which fully demonstrated the state-of-the-art technology of Wenzhou minimally invasive medicine.

"Director Ma Lianting led me onto the stage of minimally invasive medicine, Director Liu Jianmin helped me pull open the curtain of minimally invasive medicine, and Academician Zhou Liangfu's team taught me how to perform." Sun Jun said emotionally. Director Ma Lianting from the neurosurgery department of the General Hospital of the Central Theater of the People's Liberation Army is one of the founders of endovascular neurosurgery in China; Liu Jianmin from the Cerebrovascular Disease Center of the Changhai Hospital in Shanghai is the leader of cerebrovascular disease in China; and Academician Zhou Liangfu from the Huashan Hospital affiliated with the Fudan University is one of the two academicians of neurosurgery in China.

This year will usher in the 20th anniversary of Oujiang Forum on Interventional Diagnosis and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Disease.

20 years ago, Ma Lianting and Liu Jianmin, the two domestic specialists in neurosurgery field, came to Wenzhou, pushed the academic forum of a municipal hospitalto a new starting point through their joint efforts, and left an unforgettable mark on the medical forum of Wenzhou from then on.At the same time, this hospital learn from others’ strong points, and strive for excellence with help of Xuanwu Hospital, Tiantan Hospital, ZJU Second Hospital and other domestic associated units.

Rao Shangrui, deputy director of Gastrointestinal Hernia Surgery Department of Wenzhou Central Hospital (middle), is giving a live stream of the surgery at the "Dihgley" Minimally Invasive Medicine Academic Week.

Behind these academic events there is a story of perseverance and innovation, in which young people from generation to generation are maintaining what has been achieved by their predecessors and growing the business everywhere. Rao Shangrui, deputy director of the hospital's gastrointestinal hernia surgery department, is one of the outstanding representatives. On behalf of the hospital, he has won many awards in various surgical competitions at national, provincial and municipal levels, such as the second prize of the 4th "Qianchao Cup" Surgical Video Competition of Minimally Invasive Surgery of Zhejiang Province (Gastric Cancer Group and Colorectal Cancer Group) in 2022, the special prize of the first "Willow Leaf Craftsmanship Cup" Minimally Invasive Teaching and Innovation Competition in 2022, and the second prize of the first National Colorectal Surgery Video Competition of the Yandang Mountain Cup in 2022, etc.

"Everyone still thinks we are 'secretly focusing on something'." Rao Shangrui told reporters that when they participated in the live streaming of surgeries, they often heardpeople of the same occupation exclaim: "I did not expect the young doctors of Wenzhou Central Hospital also canperform endoscopic surgeries so well!

In the fine drizzle on February, this century-old hospital quietly stands in the time-honoredold city area. In the front, she is crowded with people and vehicles; behind her, the hardships of how she grew in the past can be seen.

On February 17, 2023, the 27th of the first lunar monthof Guimao Year, this dayis the 126th birthday of Wenzhou Central Hospit”
